Communities in Mareerar Gab have long faced severe water shortages, particularly during prolonged dry seasons. Households relied on distant and unreliable water sources, exposing them to significant risks including livestock loss, reduced productivity, and increased vulnerability to drought. Livestock, which form the backbone of local livelihoods, were also heavily affected due to limited and inconsistent access to water. This directly impacted household income and food security, further deepening the cycle of vulnerability.

To address these challenges, the Awale Drilling Company & Engineering Constructor initiated the Mareerar Gab Water Catchment Project—designed to provide a sustainable, climate-resilient water storage system capable of harvesting and storing rainwater for community use.

The water catchment system is fully operational and effectively capturing and storing rainwater for sustained community use. Its performance demonstrates the value of well-designed and properly executed infrastructure in addressing water scarcity in arid and semi-arid regions.

The Mareerar Gab Water Catchment Project stands as a clear example of how targeted investment in water infrastructure can transform vulnerable communities into resilient systems. Through the collaboration of development partners and the technical leadership of Awale Drilling Company & Engineering Constructor, the project has successfully converted a cycle of scarcity into a foundation for sustainable growth, improved livelihoods, and long-term stability.
